Writing my first quilt pattern

In November 2023, I completed Elizabeth Chappel’s Quilt Writing Course. Wow, what an incredibly information-packed class that was! The course included the invaluable experience of learning both Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, which are essential tools for any aspiring quilt writer.

I love how the bright colors in this quilt work so well with the detailed patterns of the rug. It's a lovely combination!

Creating a quilt pattern involved more than I expected. First, I designed a layout, then created a colorful mockup in Illustrator. I wrote clear instructions for each step, making it easy for beginners to follow. I also figured out the fabric needed for different sizes to ensure everything fit well. Lastly, I made at least one sample quilt to test the pattern's beauty and practicality.

Sewing the sample not only reveals any potential errors in the pattern but also helps understand the flow of the instructions. Once those essential edits are made, the next step in the process is Tech Editing, which ensures everything is clear and accurate for quilters. After carefully completing the final edits, I made another quilt to ensure the pattern was ready for the pattern testers.

I decided to use a delightful combination of blues and greys for this one, as I think these colors will create a stunning and calming effect throughout the quilt.

The process is more laborious than I initially imagined, but learning so many new skills and techniques along the way has been incredibly worth the effort and time invested. I LOVE this particular aspect of quilting so much that I can hardly wait to write patterns for my creative designs and share them with fellow quilters!
